Differences between versions of the game and refresh rates

Post  sparker599 on Tue May 21, 2013 10:43 pm

Not all versions of Burnout 2 are the same. Which refresh rate you use (50hz or 60hz) affects several things, and so does the system used(Gamecube, Xbox, PS2). I will attempt to list all known and speculated/theoretical differences here. Each point represents something that is unique to that version(ie. freeze glitches occur on the xbox, but not the other two systems)
If there is something I have missed or something new is discovered, please post it here and I will add it to one of these lists.

Systems:
Gamecube:
Nothing unique?

Xbox:
freeze glitches
better reflections
lag/choppiness
widescreen option is not in the game(you have to go back to the xbox's dashboard to change aspect ratio between 4:3 and 16:9)
different physics (is it that the player's car is lighter? or traffic is heavier? or something else?)
XBL Scoreboards - Shut off on April 15, 2010 along with the rest of XBL for the original xbox. These scoreboards can't and could not be viewed on the Xbox 360.
extra car colors - These cars have 4 colors instead of just one: Oval Racer, Supercar, Custom Compact, Custom Sport, Custom SUV, Custom Coupe, Custom Pickup, Custom Muscle. The Custom Roadster did have 4 colors in the gamecube/ps2 versions, but they are solid colors, so they have no stripes. However, none of these solid colors are in the Xbox version.

PS2:
only 15 crash zones
jackknife glitches are very small; they would only cause negligible damage (but still rail glitches and sink glitches)
Zones 10 and 13 are switched; Zone 10 is Avalanche, 13 is Hairpin Havoc
earlier release date (October 2002)
slower; not as good for getting good times in Time Attack. micmic85 says in a comment here that PS2 is slower, but the difference is "small but important if you want to do impressive time records": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMZFlzZD_...vXF76fZxmw

Refresh Rate:
60hz:
On zone 30/Head on Highway, the truck goes into a good position more often.
Slightly better for racing

50hz:
RST(Runaway Super Takeoff) gives a higher speed of ~190mph, instead of just 160mph on 60hz.
Cars feel lighter; elaborate on this.
Green arrows are easier to go through (for going off of the intended track)
Big airs are better, see the first of the pair of messages from Brainkiller007 below. A pair of messages from Brainkiller007:
http://youtu.be/0dSdIszuIAY i found big airs are different on 50 and 60hz........50hz is better ..........read info of vid

and

it seems things are different cause the game feels lighter on 50hz. but doesnt mean 50hz is better for everything. back in the 1st days alot of the racing pros said gamecube 60hz is best for time trial/racing......could be cause the game physics just dont feel that light , this gives the car more balance, also makes sense that its the gamecube cause xbox also feels lighter compared to gamecube..................now for crash for example 50hz will make a bus flip easier.... thats why 19 works better on 50hz cause the bus will fly farther......but for the crash itself i believe 60hz is better cause makes the crash more balanced which is better for damage, could be thats even better for a glitch cause the trucks keeps his position little better/glitches from a more balanced position.......................played alot in last time on 60hz on zone 5,14 and 28 and i cant see 50hz glitches more or even better

Personally, I've played only 2 versions of Burnout 2: Gamecube 60Hz and Xbox 60Hz. There's no much I can tell about differences, because when I played on the Gc, it was for a very short while, and it was just for fun. I remember getting a glitch back then, it was in zone 11 and score was a bit less than 100 million. that time, I was not aware of WCR's being run by Brainkiller007.
In order to get a better point of view or more I could talk about, i need to play Xbox or Gc both on 50Hz or even PAL. and also PS2 version.
'till then, i would know all of the differences you friends talk about.

In terms of damage of glitches and such, there is no "dominating console", because each gives the same damage. But some zones have better advantages on certain consoles. Such as on zone 9, if you use the regular "c-roadster strat" on Gamecube, you will usually hit the front of the bus that is in the right lane behind the truck. But with xbox, you generally don't hit it at all (you hit it more often on 50hz due to extra speed), but instead the debris from the c-roadster slow it down to a stop closer to the truck.

Example 1: Gc 50hz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LZLbaGhUto
Example 2: Xbox 50hz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsxowdwrfWM
Example 3: Gc 60hz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GzLWHjeYjo
Example 4: Xbox 60hz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFYQuANMWCA

You can see on Xbox 50hz, the bus will go beside the truck most often, while on xbox 60hz, the bus will go beside the truck least often. In my opinion the worst console to use on 9 with that strat is Gc 60hz due to its slow speed + bad scenarios. But Gc 60hz will have the bus next to the truck more often than xbox 60hz.

From that I see there is no console that will give more powerful glitches, but instead the scenarios contribute to bigger damage/multi. Slazzy got the WR here on Gc 50hz because he got an xbox 50hz-like scenario that usually doesn't happen on Gc 50hz. That shows if both consoles give same scenarios, they will both have the same damage.

For example if you use the J-muscle on 11 with runaway enabled and hold boost down and don't steer, you will usually have 20mio as your score. If you were to do the same on another console (I think even if its 50hz or 60hz doesn't change anything), the score will still be the exact same numbers matching score. So Both consoles are 100% equal in terms of score calculating.

But, there is 1 thing about the wall strat on 9. Since the xbox has lighter physics, it will give much higher scores (buses/trucks flying faster??). That strat was only played really for 1 month, so that still has much more to look at. Other than that all other zones are 100% equal to each other besides 30 which basically applies to the same kind of thing I explained before where since timing is off, scenario's change.

Is there any difference in physics or glitches between PAL60 and NTSC?

The languages is different and I see a lot more rainbow effect on pal-60 because the color rendering is different.
